DApps or decentralized applications are types of applications that aren’t owned by anyone, can never be shut down, or have downtime, whatsoever.
• Open Source – Source code of DApp is available for all to see
• Decentralized – Uses a blockchain-like cryptographic technology
• Incentive – DApp has crypto-tokens &/or digital assets for fueling itself
• Algorithm/Protocol – Generates tokens and has an inbuilt consensus mechanism.
*While these parameters may have been set by a group in the sector, there are still some facets of decentralized applications that miss one or two of these and can fall under the name DApp.
Metamask A browser extension to facilitate Dapp function
Many DApps require a browser extension called Metamask to work as intended. Metamask enables your browser to tap directly into the Ethereum blockchain without having to download the entire ledger onto your device. Because DApps that run on Ethereum use gas (small amounts of Ether), you’ll need to have some Ethereum in the Metamask wallet to use it. Note: The small amounts that are used to pay for gas do not go to the DApp developers, they go to the miners or masternode holders which maintain the network and help keep it running.
