Decentralized Applications

DApps or decentralized applications are types of applications that aren’t owned by anyone, can never be shut down, or have downtime, whatsoever.

Conditions

• Open Source – Source code of DApp is available for all to see

• Decentralized – Uses a blockchain-like cryptographic technology

• Incentive – DApp has crypto-tokens &/or digital assets for fueling itself

• Algorithm/Protocol – Generates tokens and has an inbuilt consensus mechanism.

*While these parameters may have been set by a group in the sector, there are still some facets of decentralized applications that miss one or two of these and can fall under the name DApp.

Metamask A browser extension to facilitate Dapp function

Many DApps require a browser extension called Metamask to work as intended. Metamask enables your browser to tap directly into the Ethereum blockchain without having to download the entire ledger onto your device. Because DApps that run on Ethereum use gas (small amounts of Ether), you’ll need to have some Ethereum in the Metamask wallet to use it. Note: The small amounts that are used to pay for gas do not go to the DApp developers, they go to the miners or masternode holders which maintain the network and help keep it running.

Use Cases

  • What happens when you blend the Magic 8 Ball with Ethereum? Yes, we did – click here to try it out our DApp & let us know what you think!

  • You’ve got to be kitten me right meow. No, we’re not – check it out for yourself. These cats were the first to go viral on the Ethereum blockchain’s main network.

  • Decentraland is a virtual reality platform powered by the Ethereum blockchain. Users can create, experience, and monetize content and applications. Grab a VR headset pr use your web browser and become completely immersed in a 3D, interactive world.

  • Smart Contracts that run DApps are creeping into every facet of our lives right under our noses. From keeping your identity safe, to your credit score, they will soon be just as much involved with our everyday life as the internet is. With DApps, the possibilities are limited only by the developers imagination. Just check out State of the DApps, a website that lists many of the decentralized applications, to see what new and popular ones there are now. More are added everyday. Or you could head over to DApp Radar to see just how much Ethereum they’re raking in.
